I can’t even with how much it annoys me when people refer to Kili as the younger brother between Fili and Kili.
There’s a line in the Hobbit book where Thorin points out that Fili is the youngest, saying he is the youngest so that he has the best eyes.
I mean, I love all this fan art and I still save it, but Fili is the little brother, you guys.
And the reason people think that Kili is the younger one is because the Durin family tree in the Lord of the Rings appendix says that Fili was born five years before Kili. That is apparently the canon that the movies are running with since it’s already been stated that they’re working the appendixes into the Hobbit trilogy.
I get where you’re coming from though, but the problem is that Tolkien contradicted himself and since the movieverse is running with Kili being the younger and that’s what a lot of people know, that’s what you see.
I remember going “Wait a minute…” when re-reading the book two months back, but as stated above, it’s far from the only thing Tolkien contradicted himself about. In fact, parts of The Hobbit were completely re-written after its first publication to better fit with the events in Lord of the Rings. Not to mention that the appendixes to these were written long post-Hobbit and they too were altered and re-written a zillion times (see the foreword to the 50th anniversary edition of The Fellowship for a full account). My guess is that Tolkien first intended Fili to be younger but then changed his mind later on, and we are all fairly free to chose which option to go with. :)
That being said, it might also be that Thorin actually had trouble keeping them apart, just like Armitage. Or rather that Armitage got so in character that he started to mix them up for that sole reason, haha.
OMG WHAT IS WITH ALL THE SO NO ONE TOLD YOU FEELS!!!

With journalism running in my blood, can I just point out that Carrie Bradshaw would never have written anything on a Mac because she wouldn’t be able to afford one. Reporter’s salary, hm, columnist salary.
